HOCKEY @ THE OAF THURSDAY 28TH JAN 2010
When: 03:01pm Monday 1st Feb | Uploaded by: VanessaH
A friend once said to me he measures the quality of a band by comparing their live sound against their record and if I was to do this with Hockey then they are a pretty dam fine band! Aside from a few technical snags, (as in the lead mic could have done with being turned up a notch) their performance was sound.
Hockey make nice catchy pop songs which are up beat and fun. They have good banter with the audience, even if some of their jokes did go over most peoples' heads. My favorite bit of the night was watching lead singer Ben being zealously heckled by some VERY overenthusiastic male fans. I have never seen a lead singer become so flustered and uncomfortable on stage before, I could actually see him blushing! Even funnier was that he resorted to fending them off with his microphone stand!
Undeterred, but maybe not standing so close to the edge of the stage they carried on. As to be expected 'too fake' was the hit of the night, getting even the most statuesque punter nodding along. And when the last song was finished and the curtain was drawn I was left feeling happy. And if Hockey's aim is to produce uplifting music that makes people smile. Their job here was done!
